Showtime Thinks, Therefore I Am: The Corporate Construction of “The Lesbian” on show.com’s The L Word Site

Showtime launched its dyke drama with a less-than-stellar website. Over time, Showtime pimped out the site: blogs, social networking, Second Life (SL) portal, and message boards. Kelly Kessler, PhD seeks to shed some light on the more subtle means by which fans were forced to conform to Showtime’s vision of “The Lesbian.”

WRC Film Series: Who Does She Think She Is?

In a world where women are expected to choose between their careers and their children, five women refuse to make the choice, but at what costs? From the producing team, that won an Academy Award for Born Into Brothels, comes WHO DOES SHE THINK SHE IS?, a film that examines some of the most pressing issues of our time: parenting and work, partnering and independence, economics and art. Panel discussion with local female artists will follow film.

From Danger to Dignity: The Fight for Safe Abortion

After more than a century of tragedies, a national movement toward safe, legal abortion began in the 1960s. Join VOX: Voices for Planned Parenthood for a documentary that combines rare archival footage with interviews that document the courageous efforts of those who fought to break the silence, change the laws and end the shame which surrounded abortion when it was a crime.

Join Wingspan and Lesbian Looks for a film looking at the lifelong love affair between two women, culminating in their confrontation, as elderly patients in a nursing home, with prejudice against same-sex relationships, as well as the elderly in general. Admission $10 – proceeds support Wingspan’s services for seniors, youth, transgender and anti-violence/community-building programs.

Help the Women of Haiti
Donate feminine hygiene products for the women of Haiti. Look for drop boxes in the Student Union, Resident Halls and the UA Mall to drop of your donated products during March.  Only unopened products will be accepted. Co-sponsored by Student Health Advisory Committee (SHAC) and Women’s Resource Center (WRC).
